Between the US and Canada, over 5.7 million bats have succumbed to a fungus known as  “White Nose Syndrome” that causes them to wake up from their hibernation and fly out into the cold, causing them to freeze to death.  First detected near Albany, New York, the fungus has spread to at least 16 states.
